Let’s Talk Numbers
A properly equipped Ford F-150 can tow up to around 13,000 lbs.
But here’s the part people miss: most boats don’t come close to that.
What Most People Are Actually Towing
Bass boats:
Typically 2,000–4,000 lbs with trailer
→ No problem for an F-150
Pontoon boats:
Usually 3,000–5,500 lbs
→ Still well within range
Ski / wake boats:
Around 4,000–7,000 lbs
→ This is where setup starts to matter more
What You Need to Pay Attention To
It’s not just “can it tow it”—it’s how comfortably it tows it.
You’ll want to make sure you have:
- the right engine option
- proper towing package
- trailer brake controller
- correct hitch setup
Because two F-150s on the lot can have very different capabilities.
The Honest Answer
For most recreational boating, the F-150 is more than enough.
If you’re getting into larger wake boats or towing long distances every weekend, that’s when it might make sense to step into a Super Duty.
